The Rhodes baseball team defeated Ripon College this afternoon 9-0 in their first game of the RussMatt Invitational in Winterhaven, FL.  Rhodes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, stretched it to 2-0 after three and put the game out of reach with a 5 run fifth.  Freshman Colby Mattheson picked up the victory for the  Lynx.  Mattheson is now 1-0 on the year, as the Lynx improve to 14-8.

Colby Mattheson picked up his first career victory, shutout, and complete game all in his first collegiate start.  Mattheson worked all nine innings, strucking out 12, walked 3, and gave up 4 hits.  Mattheson only allowed two runners to get past second base and faced only five hitters over the minimum. 

The Lynx offense was led by Freshman CF Travis Perkins who was 3-5 on the day with a triple, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and got hit by a pitch.  Junior LF Brandon Valentine was 4-5 with two runs scored and drove in one.  Senior SS J.R. Bizzell was 2-5 with a double and a RBI.  Senior RF Mason Mosby was 1-3 with 2 runs, a RBI, and got hit by a pitch.  Sophomore DH Chris Conkell was 2-4 with a RBI, run scored, stole a base, and got hit by a pitch.  Junior 2B Andy Boucher was 2-4 with a walk and a run scored.

Rhodes will return to action tomorrow afternoon in their second game RussMatt Invitational at 1:00 against WI-Stevens Point.
